Our Recipe for a Warm Heart

When we created this week's Cookbook of the Week, we were on the search for recipes that are perfect for sharing, crafts to make & give as thoughtful gifts and all of our best ideas for being thoughtful, thankful and just plain nice to friends & family.

We know you'll be inspired by...

While it's a little different than our usual featured titles - it comes in a smaller, perfect-for-giving size! - once you have it in your collection, you're sure to find many times throughout the year to put it to use.

Here's a crafty recipe from inside the book. Gather your pals together for a girls’ night in and mix up a batch...it's a sure-fire way to lift everyone's spirits!

Pepperminty Lip Balm
So cool and refreshing, everyone on your list will want some!

6 T. almond oil
2 t. honey
4 t. beeswax, grated
5 drops vitamin E oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
8 1/2-oz. lidded pots

In a double boiler, melt almond oil, honey and beeswax together. Remove from heat, allowing mixture to cool slightly. Add vitamin E and peppermint oils; stir until well blended. Spoon into pots and allow to cool before covering. Makes 8 pots.

Here's a Speedy & Satisfying recipe that we have enjoyed at many potlucks here at Gooseberry Patch...we think your family will love it too! 

Farmhouse Chicken Bake
From Vickie's kitchen...the cheesy goodness is irresistible!

8-oz. pkg. elbow macaroni,
    uncooked
4 green onions, sliced
2 T. butter, melted
    and divided
2 T. all-purpose flour
1-1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. chicken broth
4 c. cooked chicken,
    cubed
salt to taste
1/4 t. pepper
1/2 t. dried thyme
1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese
1 c. frozen peas, thawed
8 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled
1 c. dry bread crumbs

Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain. Meanwhile, in a skillet over medium-low heat, cook onions in one tablespoon melted butter for one minute. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually stir in milk and broth, cooking and stirring until slightly thickened. Stir in chicken, seasonings, cheese, peas and bacon. Mix in macaroni. Spoon into a greased 3-quart casserole dish. Combine bread crumbs with remaining butter; sprinkle over top. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden. Serves 6.

From Toss-Together Suppers, here's a recipe we know you'll enjoy any day of the week...

Sunday Meatball Skillet
From our very own Doris Stegner, a longtime part of our Gooseberry Patch family, her recipes are some of the best we've ever tasted. This one would be oh-so delicious alongside roasted green beans and a bowl of homemade applesauce!

3/4 lb. ground beef
1 c. onion, grated
1/2 c. Italian-flavored dry
    bread crumbs
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. catsup
1/4 t. pepper
2 c. beef broth
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. sour cream
8-oz. pkg. medium egg
    noodles, cooked
Garnish: chopped fresh
    parsley

In a bowl, combine beef, onion, bread crumbs, egg, catsup and pepper. Shape into one-inch meatballs. Spray a skillet with non-stick vegetable spray. Cook meatballs over medium heat, turning occasionally, until browned, about 10 minutes. Remove meatballs and let drain on paper towels. In a bowl, whisk together broth and flour; add to skillet. Cook and stir until mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Stir in sour cream. Add meatballs and noodles; toss to coat. Cook and stir until heated through, about 5 minutes. Garnish with parsley. Serves 4.

Just a Little Somethin' Sweet...

Were you curious about those old-fashioned recipes mentioned in Cynthia's review of Dinners on a Dime yesterday? Well, we can't be sure, but we're betting this one will bring back sweet memories for everyone!

Sent to us by Darwin McCurry of Pueblo, Colorado, the recipe was originally named for his mother, who made this delicious (and economical!) treat every week during the Depression. Darwin says he still makes it about once a month...his kids and grandkids make it too!

Four generations can't be wrong...this one's a keeper.

Kathryn's Bread Pudding

3 T. butter, softened
    and divided
2 c. brown sugar, packed
    and divided
6 slices white bread, cubed
6 eggs, beaten
12-oz. can evaporated milk
1/3 c. water
1 t. vanilla extract
1/8 t. salt

Spread one tablespoon butter in a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish. Dot remaining butter in bottom of dish. Sprinkle 1-1/2 cups brown sugar into dish; top with bread cubes. Stir together remaining brown sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, water, vanilla and salt. Pour over bread; do not stir. Place casserole dish in a larger baking pan; pour one inch of water around casserole dish. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes, until a knife inserted one inch from edge comes out clean. Serve warm or cold. Serves 6 to 8.

I love to give "usable" gifts. This book is super. I purchased this book for my Mother-in-Law when it was released and had a hard time giving it away.

This book is so well balanced that I've used recipes from the "Ladies' Lunch" for bridal and baby showers. Treats from the fun food for kids in "Snacks & Such" have been perfect for children's birthday parties, while "Food for a Crowd" recipes continue to bail me out for banquets and parties.

Whether it's a breakfast recipe for your family or a desert bar at your child's high school sports night gathering this book has it all - REALLY! If I didn't absolutely adore the other type of Gooseberry Patch cookbooks I have, I would easily say that this book is really all one kitchen needs!

Great for newlyweds, new neighbors, and of course anyone who loves time tested dishes and the memories one makes sharing a meal together.
