Tell us a little bit about your store and the town where you're located.
The store was established at its current Bettendorf location approximately 35 years ago. It began as a Hallmark party goods store and eventually became a Hallmark Gold Crown Store. My wife, Ann & I have owned the store the last 10 years and basically changed it’s focus from cards, candles and collectibles to a more boutique feel, offering home décor, fashion accessories & gourmet food. Six years ago, we opened a second store location in East Moline, IL.
Bettendorf, Iowa is a town of approximately 35,000 people on the banks of the Mississippi River and it's about 3 hours west of Chicago on I-80. It's one part of what is known as the Quad Cities metropolitan area and has a total population of about 380,000. The Rock Island Arsenal, Alcoa & John Deere are major employers in the area.
How long have you been carrying Gooseberry Patch cookbooks & calendars?
We’ve carried Gooseberry Patch about 2-1/2 years and it’s proven to be great gift item. They complement our other gourmet food offerings.
Which title is your customers' favorite lately?
A current customer-favorite title is 101 Autumn Recipes. Our readers seem to favor the spiral-bound titles with color photos of the completed recipes. Another popular item are the smaller, spiral-bound Our Favorites series...these seem to go well as add-on gifts.
Anything else you'd like to let our readers know about your store?
Our associates have personally made a lot of the Gooseberry Patch recipes with great success. It's made sales a relatively easy activity for them!
