Hearty and hot, served steaming in a bowl or mug, topped with a sprinkle of cheese or some fresh chopped onion, there aren't many things better than soup, that can warm you to your toes.
It's the classic dish to make you feel better when you're under the weather, when you've had a hard day or when the weather is gloomy...is there anything homemade soup CAN'T do? We think not.
This time of year is perfect for simmering soups and stick-to-your-ribs stews, isn't it?

Sunday Meeting Tomato Soup
Gretchen Ham from Pine City, New York shared this recipe with us. She writes, "Fresh basil really makes this soup special. It's often requested at our church's Sunday soup & sandwich lunches after church services."
In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add basil; sauté for 2 minutes. Add tomatoes and garlic; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool slightly. Working in batches, transfer tomato mixture to a blender and purée. Strain into a separate saucepan and add half-and-half, mixing very well. Reheat soup over medium-low heat; add salt and pepper to taste. Serve topped with croutons and grated Parmesan cheese. Makes 10 servings
