Warm and Sweet Mug Cozy
Keep hot tea and sugar at hand with this fun mug sleeve. Use it at your favorite coffee shop with disposable cups or at home with a mug of your favorite blend.

 

Here's what you'll need to get started.

• Pattern provided in this post
• Charm pack of at least 7 fabrics
  (see notes above for fabric selection)
• 11 1/2" x 3" scrap of InsulBright batting
• 11 1/2" x 3" scrap of cotton batting
• Matching all-purpose sewing thread
• Matching and contrasting embroidery floss
• Embroidery needle
• 1" square of hook-and-loop tape
• Tracing paper and pencil

Choose a medium-weight, machine-washable cotton or cotton-polyester blend. The cutting measurements below include 1/4" seam allowances, which are used to sew the project, unless otherwise noted in the instructions. Finished measurement of this project is 11 1/2" x 3".

Preparing the pieces

Wash, dry, and press the fabrics. Then...

• Cut six pieces, each from different fabric and 4 1/2" x 3 1/2”.
• Cut a pocket, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", from a different fabric.
• Trace the pattern below on both battings and cut them out.

Sewing Instructions

1. Stitch three of the fabric pieces together along the short edges, with the right sides together. Repeat with the remaining three pieces.

2. Stitch the two pieces (from step 1) together lengthwise with the right sides together (matching up the seams) for a new patchwork fabric that is three fabrics long by two fabrics wide.

3. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides together, and stitch the open lengthwise edges together to form a tube.

4. Roll the tube so that the lengthwise seams run across the middle of the tube and press. Cut away a 1/2" square from both sides at each end of the tube.

5. With the right sides together, stitch one end of the tube closed, pivoting at the corners. Trim the seam allowance.

6. Turn the tube right side out and press again. Insert the battings (trim them as necessary to fit), making sure they match up with each edge. The insulated batting should face the inside of the tube and the cotton batting should face the outside of the tube. Press the seam allowances at the open end of the tube, 1/4" to the wrong side, and slipstitch the end closed.

7. Pin the two pocket pieces with the right sides together. Stitch around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the piece right side out and press. Slipstitch the opening closed.

8. Using a chalk pencil, disappearing ink pen or a light pencil, trace or write the word “SWEET” from the pattern above onto the right side of the pocket. Use contrasting embroidery floss and a stem stitch to embroider the lettering onto the pocket. Then use matching embroidery floss to blanket stitch the pocket to the right side of the cozy as shown.

9. Pin the corresponding sides of the hook-and-loop tape on the tabs at each end, so that when the cozy wraps, the tapes will connect. Machine or hand-stitch them in place.
