1/4 t. pepper
1 clove garlic, slivered
2 onions, sliced and divided

Rub roast with salt and pepper. Make tiny slits in surface of roast with a sharp knife tip; insert garlic slivers. Place roast in a broiler pan. Broil 15 to 20 minutes, until roast is browned and excess fat is removed. Add one sliced onion to the bottom of a large slow cooker. Top with roast, remaining onion and other ingredients. Cover and cook on low setting for 10 hours, or high for 5 to 6 hours. Discard bay leaves and clove before serving. Serves 6.
